Movember 2026 runs from 1 to 30 November. Behind a name that mashes up "moustache" and "November" is a global movement raising awareness of men's health, one that more and more companies now use as a moment to talk prevention with their teams. This article answers the three questions HR, communications and CSR leaders usually ask when scoping an activation: where Movember comes from, what actually happens during the month, and how a company can take part.

Movember 2026: what are the dates?
Movember always follows the same calendar: the movement starts on 1 November and ends on 30 November, the day participants who grew a moustache shave it off, or show it off one last time. For a company, this timing is useful for planning your communications: announce the challenge in late October so teams can sign up before 1 November, and plan a wrap-up moment in the last days of the month to close the operation with something collective rather than letting momentum quietly fade.
Where does Movember come from?
The story starts in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia. Two friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, are having a drink at the Gypsy Bar in Fitzroy, and the conversation drifts to fashion trends that have disappeared. The moustache, dismissed as outdated, becomes a running joke: what if they brought it back? Inspired by a friend's mother who was fundraising for breast cancer research, they decide to give the idea a purpose by tying it to men's health and prostate cancer. They set the rules that still apply today, ask each participant for ten dollars, and convince 30 friends to join in: "The Original 30" source: Movember, "A Hairy Tale: The History of Movember's Early Years".
The following year, in 2004, Adam Garone and Justin Coghlan joined to help structure the project, build a website and expand it beyond Melbourne. That same year, 450 participants raised AUD 54,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia [same source]. Since then, the movement has spread to dozens of countries. Movember has now funded more than AUD 1.8 billion in prevention-focused work across men's health source: movember.com, "About Us".
What happens during Movember?
The movement has historically been built around three ways to take part, which the foundation sums up in three verbs.
- Grow. The moustache remains Movember's best-known symbol: men who want to take part start clean-shaven on 1 November and grow through to the 30th, turning a visible, easy-to-talk-about sign into an opening for conversation.
- Move. For those who don't grow a moustache, or who'd rather take part another way, Movember invites people to rack up kilometres or minutes of physical activity across the month, solo or as a team.
- Host. The third route is to organise an event, sporting or not, to rally a group around the cause and, often, raise funds.
All three options come with a fundraising element, supporting research and programmes on prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's mental health, with a strong focus on suicide prevention among men. In the UK, anyone in distress, or worried about someone close to them, can call Samaritans free on 116 123, any time, day or night source: Samaritans. Fundraising is not, however, a requirement to take part: plenty of individuals, and plenty of companies, choose a version focused on awareness and collective mobilisation rather than a fundraising target. For more on the issues themselves, our dedicated article on men's health at work sets out why the topic remains a blind spot in workplace prevention.
Taking part as a company: two options
A company that wants to get involved in Movember has two, non-exclusive, options.
Join the Movember Business Club
The Movember Foundation offers companies a dedicated scheme, the Movember Business Club, described as a workplace fundraising challenge with some friendly competition between companies over the month. Businesses that join are asked to commit to raising a minimum of £10k through internal fundraising efforts, and in return get fundraising packs, dedicated support and talks on health and wellbeing source: uk.movember.com, "At Work". This is a good fit for companies that want their activation to sit inside the foundation's official framework, with a clear fundraising target.
Run your own internal challenge
The other approach is to run your own operation internally, outside the Business Club and without an imposed fundraising target. At United Heroes, this takes the shape of a Movember challenge at work: a connected challenge across the four weeks of November, built with you around your context. FAQ
What exactly is Movember?
Movember is an international movement raising awareness of men's health, born in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, out of a challenge between friends to grow a moustache through November. It has grown into a foundation that funds research and programmes on three main issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's mental health source: us.movember.com, "A Hairy Tale".
What is a Movember challenge at work?
A Movember challenge at work is an internal mobilisation run during November, borrowing Movember's codes (moustache, physical activity, awareness) without necessarily going through the foundation's official fundraising scheme. The most common format pairs a connected challenge with prevention content and a wrap-up moment at the end of the month.
When should you start preparing for Movember 2026?
Allow four to six weeks before 1 November for a company-wide challenge: enough time to choose the format, prepare communications and invite teams to join. Announcing it in late October lets employees sign up before launch.
Does Movember's date change every year?
No. Movember always runs from 1 to 30 November. Only the day of the week the launch falls on changes year to year: in 2026, 1 November falls on a Sunday, so the first working day of the challenge will be Monday 2 November.
